Monuments

Overview

Monuments are large multi-phase construction projects. Many campaign missions require a Monuments rating high enough to finish the city; some also demand a specific monument type. Construction depends on raw materials (bricks, stone, timber, and later marble or sandstone), Work Camps for peasant labour, and the right construction guilds to direct the work.

Detailed pages for individual monuments will appear here as they are documented. Currently: Sphinx, Obelisk.

How construction works

Place site Stock materials Work Camps + guilds Phases / courses Finished monument
  1. Place the footprint on clear ground (or cliffs / rock where the monument requires it).
  2. Deliver materials to storage yards near the site. Quarries and brickworks are often the bottleneck.
  3. Staff Work Camps so labourers walk to the monument. The same camps also serve farms — harvest season can starve construction.
  4. Staff the required guilds (bricklayers, stonemasons, carpenters, and in Cleopatra artisans). Guild members supervise on site.
  5. Work proceeds in phases (mastaba courses, pyramid courses, scaffolding, finishing). Progress shows in the monument info window.
  6. After a burial tomb is finished and burial provisions are dispatched (Overseer of Monuments; skip if the mission requires none), a one-shot funeral walker procession walks to the tomb and despawns. Tomb robbers stealing provisions later do not repeat the funeral.
  7. Dispatched goods credit a per-tomb stock ledger (emptiest finished tomb first). City totals still drive the Overseer UI and win checks; robbers empty the target tomb’s stock, then the city counter. With several tombs, one site can be looted without wiping every grave.
Monuments do not need a road connection. Place them where materials and labour can reach them reasonably quickly — not across the entire map from your quarries and camps.

Guilds & labour

BuildingRole
Work Camp Peasant labour for clearing, hauling, and building courses. Shared with floodplain farming.
Bricklayers’ Guild Brick mastabas and brick-core pyramids.
Stonemasons’ Guild Stone tombs, stepped / true / bent pyramids, sphinx, obelisks, mausoleum, sun temple, most Cleopatra monuments.
Carpenters’ Guild Wooden scaffolding and ramps (pyramids, sphinx, mausoleum, obelisks, etc.).
Artisans’ Guild Cleo Painting and finishing for royal burial tombs and several Cleopatra monuments.

You often need more than one guild of the same type on large monuments. Keep storage yards supplied; idle guilds with empty yards do nothing.

Size & materials

Cleopatra monuments

The Cleopatra expansion adds cliff tombs and Alexandria-era monuments. Materials vary (marble, sandstone, timber, copper, granite); guilds are usually Work Camp + Carpenters + Stonemasons — Artisans mainly for royal tombs. Some monuments must sit on cliffs or a special island.

Monument rating

Finished (and partially built) monuments contribute to the city’s Monuments rating. In Akhenaten the score is approximate and additive: each monument type has a weight in src/scripts/city/monuments.js, then rating ≈ 2.25 × Σ(weight × progress) + 4.5. Exact original per-monument points are still a pending weight recalibration. Examples with current weights: one finished small mastaba → 9; three → 18; one medium stepped pyramid → 40.

Scripts & rating
  • src/scripts/city/monuments.jsMONUMENT_WEIGHTS, monthly rating update
  • Per-building configs under src/scripts/building/ (e.g. sphinx.js)
  • Catalogue summary: buildings/index.html#monuments
Documented monument pages
  • SphinxBUILDING_SPHINX (=210)
  • ObeliskBUILDING_SMALL/LARGE_OBELISK (=262 / 263)
  • Abu SimbelBUILDING_ABU_SIMBEL (=230)

BUILDING_COLOSSI (=270) and BUILDING_TEMPLE_OF_LUXOR (=271) are not buildable Cleopatra monuments. They are unused editor/win-type locale labels (gr198:31 / :32). Mission 43’s “Colossi of Abu Simbel” uses Abu Simbel, not type 270.
